Life is a Highway - it’s the journey, not the destination

Ok - plan of action!

I need to really be concentrating on Alex with reading. She is normally ok alongside Marcus, but M is getting to the stage that he’s reading well and needs practise. Alex on the other hand is really struggling so I need to be going back to basics with her. We have the Explode the Code books which we all really like so more of that I think and if she’s still struggling with it all I’ll start looking for look-say kind of ways to teach her. Will be hard after all our phonics! M likes the workbooks too and I don’t think it will do him any harm to do some more in them.

Maths is going well, after all my wobbles M seems to have leapt ahead. When we do adding sums Alex used to get them way before M but now it’s swapped over. Planning to much more games, learning through stories (have quite a few maths readers now) and try and be relaxed about it. We really don’t do well with structure and workbooks. I’ve been looking at this Living Math site for a while and have started implementing loads of stuff from it. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it. I’d love to learn everything through books!

History is going to be books too. Have got Story of The World and plan to do some of that. Geography I think will be attached there too. The Magic Tree House books are proving really popular and they cover both sections so we’re sorted I think.

Science is one area we’re going to try and do more of. M really likes it and that’s as good a reason as any. We’ve a shelf load of kits and all the Sonlight stuff too so should be sorted.

Erm, what else have we? Music. Hmm not doing so well there, have recorders and books but haven’t doine any lately. Must start it up again. Art. Well I got some more of the Katie books (like Katie and the Impressionists) which my 2 really like, but on a more practical level we’re pretty crap. Mostly because of the house, but I should be doing more. Argh!

Foreign Language. Again more can be done here. I ‘d like to do Latin and am planning on getting the Minimus course. We should do more French or Spanish I guess.

Ugh, just realised now how little we’ve been doing lately. Oh well, plenty to do. Best get going…

  1. Don’t know if I could face Latin but hey, why not! I loke the idea of maths through books, how does it work? Teh page won’t load for me - don’t think I have the right plug-ins or something!

  2. hmm, it was working for me earlier, but not now. There’s lots on it with lots of lists on readers (most American though) and ideas for games.
