Life is a Highway - it’s the journey, not the destination

Suppose I could

write up our trip to Edinburgh while James watches The Apprentice.

We had a really nice time, if a little stressful at times. The kids are just being really stroppy and we’re not dealing with it too well, which does get me down a bit. Mostly it’s the ‘us not dealing with it well’ part that gets to me though. Lots to think about there anyway.

The train journey up went well, lots of musical chairs going on though! Kids loved it and seemed a really quick way to get to Edinburgh.

Once we arrived in Edinburgh we got ourselves one of the 24 hour tour bus tickets which would take us near to our bed for the night and checked ourselves in. It was a bus with headphones and you could listen to the Horrible Histories channel which was really interesting. We’d bought the Horrible Histories Edinburgh book before going up and read some of it so it was all familiar territory.

It was quite sunny, but cold, once we’d dropped off luggage so we made the decision to take a walk up Calton Hill. I’d never even known it was there even though I’ve been to Edinburgh so many times in my life. Nearly killed James on the way up, as his asthma got to him. Good job he had his inhaler!! Really nice views from the top, but was cold and started to snow!!

We headed off to the Old Town again after that and everyone really wanted to go to the Museum of Childhood so we did that as it wasn’t going to be open on Sunday. Felt a bit faint in there though, so we popped out to a cafe for some sugar injection and came back in later on. Nice little museum, kids really liked it there.

Tea was various bits and bobs, but M really wanted to try a battered Mars Bar after I told him that you could get it in Scotland. Funnily enough he didn’t like it!!

We were up early in the morning, making sure we were all packed in a nice compact way and we headed off for the next day of being a tourist ;) The Museum of Scotland wasn’t open for another hour so we spent some time wandering around Greyfriars Churchyard. We’d read the story of Greyfriars Bobby before going up and the kids loved it. So getting to see all the bits about the story was really good for them, they took a stick to his grave and left it there and Alex just totally fell in love with ‘Bobby’

Snowed a bit in the morning too, not loads though, but looked really nice.

Wandered round a bit more, found the ‘Heart of Midlothian’ which Marcus really wanted to spit on for good luck ;) And then headed off to the museum.

Had a nice time round there, but the highlight of that day was at lunchtime going to The Elephant Cafe for lunch which was such a lovely little cafe with great views of the castle and the churchyard we’d been round in the morning. Lovely food too. Apparantly it’s the cafe that JK Rowling spent lots of time in when she started writing Harry Potter. Can see why she liked it so much!

Afternoon was more museum and as James and I were flagging quite a bit, with a good few hours to go before our train home we decided to try and see if there was a film we could watch so we could rest! Gosh we are so unfit!!

Really enjoyed the trip, but was definitely a bit stressful! Less than 2 weeks till we’re off again, this time hopefully some sun and relaxing!!
